For over 100 years, people have recognized this as a real syndrome, and they’ve recognized the effects those who have it deal with every single day.
But recently, medical specialists just aren’t on the same page. Here are the main reasons why:
Reason 1: They just flat-out haven’t heard of it.
If this is the first time you’ve heard of adrenal fatigue, it shouldn’t surprise you that many doctors haven’t heard about it, either. There are many reasons for this, from the fact that many medical schools don’t cover things beyond the basics (seriously – most medical schools don’t even look into nutrition), to many doctors’ inability to keep up on the upcoming research and documentation coming out every year from medical researchers.
Remember when we were being told that saturated fats made us fat and that we should make a big push toward eating more carbohydrates? That was considered sound medical advice for decades. Only recently have studies been coming out to show that this is not only false, but that consuming fewer healthy fats and more carbohydrates directly influenced and maybe even caused America’s obesity epidemic! Some doctors are in on the new standard, but many others are still telling their patience to cut out the fats and up the carb intake.
So it’s not shocking that many doctors simply can’t keep up with the latest trends in the medical field, no matter how hard they may try. Then, when these doctors are posed with a patient who believes they have adrenal fatigue, they are more likely to dismiss it in lieu of conditions with which they are more familiar. It’s an honest mistake, though it can cost their patients a lot in the long run.
Reason 2: They rely on tests.
Another major reason doctors are resistant to adrenal fatigue is because it is difficult to definitively test. Modern medicine relies heavily on being able to take blood samples, pop them into a machine, and have the computer tell them exactly what’s going on inside your body. This is great, but there’s one huge problem: even our most advanced tests can usually only detect problems when they become really big.
Unfortunately, most modern laboratory detection methods are just not sensitive enough to spot the early warning signs of an illness, especially one that slowly grows and worsens over years and years like adrenal fatigue. Tests come back appearing “normal,” so doctors assume there is nothing inherently wrong with their patient. This is frequently the case with adrenal fatigue.
Basically, they aren’t “bad enough” yet to be diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency, despite the fact that they are showing symptoms. Many of these patients leave the doctor’s office frustrated that they don’t have any answers or solutions to their fatigue.
It’s also worth noting that cortisol tests have been shown to indicate adrenal fatigue, but many doctors are skeptical of them because they require intense interpretation, which can be difficult for most physicians without a lot of experience in adrenal fatigue (which, as you’ve probably guessed, is most of them).
Reason 3: They are misinformed.
This is kind of a combination of the first two issues I’ve discussed above. It goes without saying that many doctors do not have the time to research adrenal fatigue themselves, so they rely instead on the information they’re getting from other physicians.
Unsurprisingly, many of their colleagues and peers are likely adrenal fatigue skeptics, and the information your doctor may be getting from his friends probably reflects this belief.
Doctors mean well – but their lack of acknowledgement can have devastating effects.
The majority of doctors really do want what’s best for their patients. Due to the lack of support for adrenal fatigue in most medical communities, they simply want to make sure you get the help you need for the symptoms you’re experiencing. This is why so many people with adrenal fatigue are mistakenly diagnosed with other issues, like depression, chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia.
Doctors mean well, but this kind of misdiagnosis can be harmful.
